Toyota Motor Corp. has plans to recall 270,000 cars globally due to erroneous engines, Japan’s daily Yomiuri reported.
The recall includes its premium brand Lexus. The report comes just days after it recalled 17,000 Lexus models in US due possible fire hazard and had also recalled 11,500 Lexus models a month ago pertaining to faulty steering.
Toyota spokesman Hideaki Homma said the company was evaluating measures to deal with the problem of defective engines that can stop the vehicle while moving. He did confirm a recall was being considered, said the report.
About 180,000 of the 270,000 recalled vehicles were sold outside Japan.
Toyota’s President Akio Toyoda apologized to shareholders for the car maker’s recall troubles in annual meeting on June 24.
It had recently reported an increase in global sales whereby it sold 676,675 units in May compared to 596,887 units in the same period last year, a 13.4 percent increase.
Increasing recalls for Toyota can surely marginalize its standing in the market as the top car producer. With GM showing signs of growth again and Volkswagen on the heels with an ambition to become the top automaker with its stable of rich brands, the industry leader may face tough time ahead.
